HOW DOES IT WORK?
- Need for adequate shelter. Is your present housing unsafe, unhealthy, too crowded or too expensive?
- Ability to pay. Can you pay a small monthly mortgage payment? Are you working on your credit rating? Does your family income fit the guidelines below?
- Willingness to "partner." Can you, along with friends and family, do 350 hours of sweat equity?
The income guidelines released by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) are listed below. These serve as a guideline or starting point. The Family Selection Committee also has to review the family's debt to ensure that purchasing this home--even though there isn't any interest--is a good option for a family. This is based on information that HUD released in April 2019. The HUD income guidelines are updated every April or May.
Please understand that credit checks and background checks as well as home visits will be necessary to be chosen for a Habitat home. Sometimes that sounds scary when you are applying. Just be as truthful and open as possible with your application. Also, if you would like, you are welcome to send along a note describing your situation. You don't have to be limited to the little blanks in an application.
